Students From Around the World Gather for the Second Annual UC Davis Green Technology Entrepreneurship Academy

Academy Gives Students Skills to Bring Green Tech Innovations to Market; Begins July 7

DAVIS, CA--(Marketwire - June 30, 2008) - The University of California at Davis (UC Davis) Center for Entrepreneurship announced today that 50 students from around the world have been selected to attend the second annual Green Technology Entrepreneurship Academy in Incline Village, Nev. The Academy will be held July 7-11, 2008. The Academy is taught by experts from the nation's top venture capital firms, law firms, and research institutions and gives students the knowledge and skills they need to move their research out of the laboratory and into the market. More information about the program can be found at

Students from 23 universities around the world will attend this summer's Academy. The participants, who are typically doctoral students, post docs, and research faculty working in a wide range of science and engineering fields, will come to the Academy with a wealth of knowledge about cutting-edge sustainable technologies.

The five-day program will cover the basics of entrepreneurship, with sessions focusing on intellectual property, elevator pitches, development strategies, market validation, business plan presentations, and the logistics of building a team and establishing an organization. Time will also be set aside for networking and mentoring sessions with the venture capitalists, attorneys, and research scientists on the Academy's faculty, lectures from entrepreneurs about their own experiences, group presentations, and social hours. Throughout the week, participants will work in small groups to prepare a business concept, and, at the end of the week, present the concept to a panel of faculty members. Students leave the Academy with an understanding of the next steps needed to move forward with the concept.

The Academy's faculty is drawn from members of the venture capital community, including venture capitalists from American River Ventures, CalCEF Clean Energy Angel Fund, DFJ Frontier, MDV-Mohr Davidow Ventures, Nth Power, Physic Ventures, and Sierra Angels; the legal community, including attorneys from Morrison|Foerster; and the research community, including representatives from National Instruments, San Diego Gas & Electric, and the UC Davis Energy Efficiency Center. Amory Lovins, co-founder, chairman, and chief scientist, Rocky Mountain Institute, will be the keynote speaker at a networking dinner on the evening of July 9.

"The diverse student body at this year's Academy will bring a fresh batch of ideas to the table, and will leave armed with the tools they need to propel their ideas forward," said Associate Professor Andy Hargadon, director, UC Davis Center for Entrepreneurship. "This year's curriculum is stronger than ever, and I know that the faculty members are looking forward to sharing their expertise with the students."
