Students Learn Money Management Skills From Local Credit Union

Seventh Graders at Grandview Middle School Round Out Year With Financial Literacy

MAPLE GROVE, MN--(Marketwired - Jun 19, 2013) - TopLine Federal Credit Union has taught over a 100 junior high seventh grade students the basics of personal finance during the school year at Grandview Middle School in Mound, MN. Mrs. Julie Taintor, Family and Consumer Science teacher, first asked TopLine to present to her class in May 2012 and since has continued to extend the invite to TopLine to discuss the importance of learning money management basics with her classes on a quarterly basis.

TopLine's lessons focused on teaching good money habits by helping students understand how to manage personal finances. Each interactive session illustrated how to compare needs to wants; set financial goals; craft a budget; importance of saving; how to use a checking account and balance a checkbook; spend wisely; how to understand the difference between debit and credit cards; and ways to protect private information from identity theft. The students are then encouraged to continue the conversation at school and home.

"TopLine's dedication to teaching financial literacy is truly amazing," said Julie Taintor, Family and Consumer Science teacher at Grandview Middle School. "I'm grateful for TopLine's commitment to give-back to the community and to help students learn real-life money management skills."

"It's never too early to start teaching kids about money, and at TopLine, we welcome the opportunity to provide financial education in the communities we serve," says Harry Carter, president and CEO, TopLine Federal Credit Union. "We're focused on helping children establish financial literacy early on so they'll be in the habit of practicing good money management habits throughout their lives."

TopLine offers financial literacy seminars for young people throughout the year at their Maple Grove Learning Center, and will visit interested schools or other groups to present age-appropriate lessons about personal money management.
