Students of Wayland Baptist University Christian Colleges Give Back to the Community

PLAINVIEW, TX--(Marketwire - December 13, 2010) - Living and learning at Wayland Baptist University and Christian colleges is as much about developing emotionally, spiritually, and physically as it is academically, and there is no better example of this than the extraordinary ways WBU students give back to the community.

Last week, four different WBU student organizations came together to provide a better Thanksgiving for local residents. Members of Christian sororities Alpha Delta Kappa and Sigma Phi Lambda and fraternity Kappa Upsilon Chi collected nearly 200 pounds of food; men's, women's and children's clothing; and jackets, blankets and warm weather gear which was donated to the Crisis Center of the Plains. Wayland's Spanish Club also delivered baskets with $50 in food and $30 gift cards to United Supermarkets to ten families in Plainview.

"We want our students to earn academic degrees while attending WBU, but because we are a faith-based university, we are also committed to cultivating humility and love for others," said a representative from WBU's Center for Student Leadership and Involvement. "We want to equip our students to be leaders who truly understand and experience the joy of serving God by serving others."

The holidays aren't the only time WBU students take part in community service. WBU's Annual Degree of Difference Day event in October places students, faculty and staff on work teams in various areas of the community for an entire work day, where groups have painted, cleaned, collected food, washed cars, landscaped and more.

In addition, WBU's Apostolos Ministry group involves students as mentors to high school freshmen and others who benefit from positive role models, friendship and fellowship. The group has seen a decrease in dropout rates and teen pregnancies, as well as improved grades.
