STUDY: Millennials Say Enterprises Need to Catch Up to Their Desktop User Expectations

AppSense 2015 Desktop Experience Study Shows Logons Longer Than 30 Seconds Prompt Millennials to Focus on Mobile Devices and Co-Workers, Hurting Productivity

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwired - Oct 6, 2015) -  Business users' desktop experience has a significant impact on workplace productivity -- especially for Millennials. While nearly all (98%) business users say that a good desktop experience makes them more productive, Millennials are the most distracted when computers are slow. Of those business users that are reportedly "always" distracted when they logon or open a slow application, 28% are Millennials, 16% are Gen X and only 6% are Baby Boomers.

These work distractions can be costly, with half (50%) of business users' computer-related distractions lasting between one and five minutes and nearly two in five (38%) lasting more than five minutes. Millennials are the hardest to please and the most likely to play a game, go on social media or make a personal call during these distractions. These results are according to a new study by AppSense, the global leader of user environment management (UEM) solutions for the secure endpoint.

"Millennials are accustomed to fast phones and even faster texting. When they come to work they are highly frustrated by a desktop experience that is slow and far less optimized than their typical mobile experience," said Jed Ayres, Senior Vice President of Marketing, AppSense. "We're in a super-charged talent environment. Distractions Differ by Generation

What users do when they are distracted also varies by generation. Millennials are most distracted by their mobile devices and co-workers. Baby Boomers are most distracted by paper. All business users surveyed reported doing the following when waiting for their computer:

  • Made a personal call, played a game or went on social media: 8% of Baby Boomers, 21% of Gen X, and 28% of Millennials
  • Paper-based work: 58% of Baby Boomers, 45% of Gen X, and 44% of Millennials
  • Got a drink or visited the restroom: 45% of Baby Boomers, 56% of Gen X, and 55% of Millennials
  • Chatted with a co-worker: 36% of Baby Boomers, 43% of Gen X, and 45% of Millennials
  • Made a work call: 27% of Baby Boomers, 33% of Gen X, and 29% of Millennials

Millennials are also the hardest to please when it comes to their desktop experience. Only 56% of Millennials feel that their IT organization delivers a desktop that enables them to be very productive. Comparatively, 64% of Gen X and 73% of Baby Boomers feel the same. But, when it comes to the benefits of personalizing their computer, 92% of all business users see the benefits:

  • 62% are more comfortable in their work environment
  • 57% are more productive when they can make things the way they want
  • 52% are more efficient
  • 35% have a better opinion of their employer for allowing desktop flexibility
