Study Shows New Mattress Can Rev Up Romance

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Jan 30, 2012) - Could a new mattress be the secret to a better romantic life for couples?

In a new study released just in time for Valentine's Day, nearly a quarter of Americans surveyed say they experience "diminished" romance when sleeping on a mattress over ten years old. Of those respondents, 83% claim the old mattress as the main reason for the decline in "bedded bliss." Respondents sleeping on older mattresses report that the discomfort makes them feel ill and poorly rested. The study was fielded for Sleepy's the mattress professionals.

Working with Dr. Robert Oexman of the Sleep to Live Institute, respondents answered questions such as "How often do you and your partner enjoy 'couple time' and "How satisfactory is the quality and frequency of romantic relations?"

Couples were also asked if they experienced aches and pains and felt tired upon waking, with more than a quarter of all respondents reporting "yes." Eighty percent of those suffering from such ailments believed that their older mattress could be to blame.

The survey results come in contrast to responses by owners of new beds, who according to a 2009 study conducted by Harvard researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, reported that a switch to a quality mattress resulted in a significant improvement in sleep quality. This, in turn, led to increased romantic affection with their partners.

According to Dr. Oexman, it's not surprising that mattress comfort and quality are linked to intimate relations, since adequate and restful sleep is important to well-being. "Many studies have shown that the right mattress can result in significant improvement in sleep quality, the ability to fall asleep faster and sleep longer, as well as a reduction in back and neck aches and a significant decrease in soreness, stiffness and pain," explains Dr. Oexman. He continues, "Study participants who enjoy improved quality of sleep have even reported a decrease in food cravings, a more refreshed appearance, and a decrease in negative moods." All of which, according to Dr. Oexman, can lead to an enhanced love life!

"Next to healthful sleep, 'bedded bliss' is the secondary goal in the bedroom," says Dr. Oexman. "To help keep your relationship alive, you owe it to yourself and your partner to do all you can to make your bedroom a healthy, happy environment."

"Our mission is to eradicate a 'bad night's sleep,'" says Sleepy's COO, Adam Blank. "We strive to give people the best bedroom experience possible." This philosophy is echoed in the company's latest ad campaign which shows vignettes of families, kids and couples enjoying comfortable, cozy beds.
