StyleVision 2011 Adds Ground Breaking Report and Chart Building Functionality

Generate Stunning Database, XML, and XBRL Reports With Chart Creation and Other Advanced Functionality

BEVERLY, MA--(Marketwire - September 20, 2010) -  Altova® (http://www.altova.com), creator of XMLSpy®, the industry leading XML editor, recently announced the availability of Version 2011 of StyleVision, its visual stylesheet and report design tool. Version 2011 adds multiple new features that enhance StyleVision's powerful multi-channel reporting functionality, including creation of charts and graphs based on database, XML, and XBRL data; integration with Altova MapForce®; enhanced support for HTML/CALS tables; the ability to import existing XSLT files to augment designs; and a new scripting and toolbar editor for creating eForms for the Authentic® platform.

The Altova team will be demonstrating these new features at Oracle OpenWorld (booth #3726) in San Francisco this week.

"The addition of chart creation in the latest release of StyleVision brings a whole new dimension to analyzing, reporting, and communicating business data," said Alexander Falk, President and CEO for Altova. "This ground-breaking functionality adds to StyleVision's already robust database, XML, and XBRL report design tools, giving customers an advanced solution for multi-channel business reporting on any scale. What's more, in addition to generating reports in HTML, Microsoft® Word, and PDF, StyleVision also creates an electronic form for use in Altova Authentic, bringing the reporting cycle full circle with dynamic content-entry forms for non-technical business users."

Altova StyleVision 2011 includes the following new features:

  • Chart Creation -- StyleVision 2011 allows point-and-click creation of 2D and 3D pie, line, bar, and gauge charts to display and analyze database, XML, and XBRL data in multichannel reports. During the report design process, the Chart Configuration dialog lets users easily choose the type of chart or graph desired, and then populate the chart axes with relevant source data selected via XPath expressions. Users can input the statements directly into the dialog, or get assistance with XPath syntax using StyleVision's built-in XPath Builder. Charts include highly customizable titles, axis labels, colors, fonts, and more. Designers can even utilize dynamic XPath settings to apply variable data from the report's source to the chart settings.

Charts add an eye-catching graphical component to the reports that StyleVision simultaneously generates in HTML, RTF, PDF, and Word 2007+. Advanced report creation options such as drag-and-drop design, absolute positioning, modular designs, conditional templates, dynamic data selection, and more, combine with charting to make StyleVision a uniquely powerful database reporting and XML reporting solution that's adaptable to a wide variety of business scenarios.

StyleVision designers can also add charts to interactive electronic forms created for Authentic, Altova's low cost XML and database content editor for non-technical users. Charts displayed in Authentic eForms help users visualize and update XML and database data and provide a graphical aspect to user friendly content editing.

  • XBRL Chart Wizard -- While previous versions of StyleVision have supported the creation of attractive, automated reports for publishing XBRL data, the XBRL Chart Wizard in StyleVision 2011 adds a visual dimension to XBRL analysis. The XBRL Chart Wizard walks the user through the process of selecting the XBRL concepts and periods to display on the chart, which is then customizable as with any other chart, as described above. These easy-to-create charts provide a significant benefit to companies producing XBRL reports, since a graphical representation of data relationships can reveal trends that may otherwise remain hidden.

  • Integration with Altova MapForce -- Charts and reporting also benefit Altova MissionKit customers using StyleVision and MapForce together. Integration between the two products allows MapForce users to automatically render results of their XML and XBRL mappings using an associated StyleVision report design. This very powerful feature essentially combines MapForce's any-to-any data mapping capabilities with a sophisticated rendering engine, meaning that users can now automate chart and report generation from virtually any data format -- including databases, flat files, Excel, EDI, and more -- that can be mapped to an XML Schema or XBRL taxonomy.

  • Toolbar and Scripting Editor for Authentic -- StyleVision 2011 includes an integrated scripting environment that allows designers to build advanced content entry and eForms applications based on the Authentic platform. The scripting functionality (global declarations, event handlers, macros, and forms) is embedded directly into the StyleVision design (.SPS) so that Authentic end-users only need to open the file to work with complex, dynamic, and user friendly eForms.

Scripting adds powerful new options for creating Authentic applications and includes:

    • Script editor with form support

    • Toolbar editor

    • Support for JavaScript and VBScript

    • Ability to define event handlers

    • Access to Authentic COM interface from script macros

    • Ability to debug macros

  • Enhancements for Working with HTML/CALS Tables -- HTML and CALS provide standard tags for representing the structure of tables and are often used in common documentation projects, as well as in XML industry standards such as DocBook, DITA, and more. Support for HTML/CALS tables means that StyleVision 2011 will automatically recognize values dictating table structure, such as column number, row height, etc., and apply them to rendered HTML, RTF, PDF, Word 2007+, and eForm output. StyleVision designers can add additional presentation styles to HTML/CALS tables, and can even make multiple assignments to HTML/CALS tables in a single schema.

  • Ability to Import Existing XSLT Stylesheets -- Now, instead of having to design stylesheet or report templates from scratch, StyleVision users will be able to leverage work already in progress by basing their designs on existing XSLT files that were designed for HTML output, or XSLT files with XSL:FO commands for output in PDF. The user simply specifies the XSLT file and schema source, and the template is loaded into the design pane where it can be used for multi-channel publishing and/or to add additional styles using StyleVision's graphical user interface.
