Subaru Introduces PZEV Legacy and Outback

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Jan. 17, 2008) - Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) announced that Partial Zero Emission Vehicles (PZEV) will join the Canadian Legacy and Outback lineups this spring, as 2009 models. The Legacy sedan and wagon, and Outback PZEV models were unveiled at Le Salon International de l'auto de Montréal.

PZEV is a designation awarded to vehicles that meet strict emissions standards set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Subaru PZEV vehicles in Canada meet the Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle standard (SULEV) and eliminate fuel-system evaporative emissions. Compared to an average new vehicle, Subaru PZEV vehicles have 90 percent cleaner emissions. In certain cases, gasoline engine vehicles meeting PZEV emission standards are also even cleaner than hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles. In addition, Subaru PZEV vehicles achieve such a complete fuel burn that in very smoggy urban areas, the exhaust out of the tailpipe can actually be cleaner than the air outside.

"We are delighted to offer Canadians the opportunity to purchase a vehicle that reduces their impact on the earth while retaining the fun, freedom, confidence and control that Legacy and Outback deliver," said Katsuhiro Yokoyama, president and CEO of SCI. "The Legacy and Outback PZEV have also received SmartWay certification from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and are listed in its Green Vehicle Guide that recommends the cleanest and most fuel-efficient vehicle choices."

The 2009 Legacy and Outback PZEV are powered by a modified version of Subaru's 2.5-litre 4-cylinder SOHC 16-valve horizontally opposed SUBARU BOXER that produces 170 hp at 6,000 rpm and 170 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm, and uses regular unleaded fuel. All Subaru 2.5-litre engines incorporate Subaru AVCS variable valve timing technology to optimize the engine's volumetric efficiency throughout the rev band. The engine will be mated to a 4-speed electronically controlled SPORTSHIFT automatic transmission.

Like every Legacy and Outback, PZEV models will be well-equipped with a broad range of standard features, including a split-folding rear seat, cruise control; power windows, door locks and mirrors; keyless entry; adjustable dash illumination; dual-mode trip odometer; generous cabin storage, and a 100-watt AM/FM/CD stereo with MP3/WMA capability and an auxiliary audio input.

The 2009 PZEV lineup will be further enhanced with heated front seats, power driver's seat, and heated exterior mirrors with integrated LED turn signals. Wagon models will be fitted with a retractable cargo cover, and the Outback PZEV will also be equipped with standard fog lights and a power tilt-and-slide twin-panel glass moonroof.

In addition to the active safety of Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System, every Subaru is built to the highest levels of passive safety. Legacy/Outback has garnered the highest award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) - Top Safety Pick - in the mid car segment, thanks to its light but strong Ring Frame Reinforced structure. In addition, Legacy/Outback received 5-star ratings for the driver and front passenger and rear passengers in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) crash tests.

The 2009 Legacy and Outback PZEV are built at Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA), the first U.S. automotive assembly plant to be designated a wildlife habitat. In addition, it was the first US manufacturing facility to reach zero landfill status where nothing from its manufacturing effort goes into landfill - it is all reused and recycled. In addition to reducing the environmental impact of its vehicles, Subaru is committed to integrating sound environmental practices throughout its business. Subaru was the first automotive manufacturer in North America to receive the stringent ISO 14001 environmental management standard. Since then, Subaru has achieved ISO 14001 accreditation across its entire North American operation, including administration offices, distribution warehouses and service technical training centres.
