Subsentio President Steve Bock Presents "Citizens Appreciate State Troopers" Awards to Colorado State Patrol Technician Garth Crowther and Trooper Brent Gilleland

DENVER, CO--(Marketwired - Aug 4, 2014) - In a tribute to Colorado lawmen who go beyond the call of duty, Subsentio President Steve Bock presented the "Citizens Appreciate State Troopers" (C.A.S.T.) Award to Technician Garth Crowther and State Trooper Brent Gilleland in a ceremony held August 1 at the Governor's Residence.

"It is a privilege to honor two individuals whose heroism speaks to a quality shared by all men and women of the Colorado State Patrol -- the willingness to save a life even when it means putting their own lives in harm's way," said Bock. "In this instance, the threat was the most deadly of all -- a force of nature."

On February 9, 2013, off-duty State Trooper Gilleland and his family were returning from a trip to New Mexico when they hit a classic Colorado blizzard: waist-deep snow and 18 degree temperatures, with winds gusting to 30 mph. At the Cumbres/La Manga Pass they were hailed by Jeff Mondragon of the Colorado Department of Transportation. Mondragon pointed to a vehicle that had crashed through a barrier and plunged 150 feet down a steep embankment.

Patrolling nearby, Colorado State Patrol Technician Crowther was quickly dispatched to the scene. Together, Crowther, Gilleland and Mondragon moved down the slope to find the injured driver in critical condition and suffering hypothermia. Making numerous trips up the cliff to gather blankets from other motorists, and managing to start the crashed vehicle and its heater, the men kept the victim alive in the hour it took for Emergency Services to arrive.

The Colorado State Patrol subsequently honored Crowther and Gilleland with the State Patrol Lifesaving Award. Mondragon received the Certificate of Honor, which is bestowed on a private citizen for a conspicuous act of heroism that involves a risk of life and knowledge of that risk.
