SUBWAY President and Co-Founder Among Keynote Speakers at 2011 CFA National Convention

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 30, 2011) - Fred DeLuca, President and Co-Founder of SUBWAY Restaurants, is one of several prominent franchisors who will deliver a keynote presentation at the 20th annual Canadian Franchise Association (CFA) National Convention, to be held at the Sheraton on the Falls in Niagara Falls from April 3-5. 

Over 300 franchising leaders and support service professionals are expected to attend the industry's premier event of the year to share best practices, network and celebrate Canada's top franchise systems. The CFA National Convention will feature five Keynote Speakers:

  • On Sunday April 3 at 5 p.m., Convention attendees will listen to an inspiring address by Donald Cooper, President of The Donald Cooper Corporation on how to create a clear business vision.
  • Fred DeLuca, President and Co-Founder of SUBWAY Restaurants will deliver a keynote presentation on Monday April 4 at 8:30 a.m. SUBWAY Restaurants was founded in 1967 as a small sandwich shop and a way for DeLuca to fund his university education. Today, it has grown to become the world's largest quick service restaurant chain with over 34,000 locations in 95 countries. DeLuca will share his simple but essential recipe for franchise success and the inspiring story of SUBWAY Restaurants.
  • Greg Nathan, Managing Director of Franchise Relationships Institute, will speak on Monday April 4 at 9:30 a.m. to educate attendees on creating profitable partnerships between franchisors and franchisees. Widely regarded as the world's foremost authority on the franchise relationship, Nathan was also named by USA Franchise Times as one of the Top 10 thought-leaders in franchising.
  • On Tuesday April 5 at 9:30 a.m., Randy Moore, President & CEO of Mister Transmission will reveal the secret to leading a more exciting, energizing and successful life, both in business and on a personal level.
  • Sherry McNeil, VP of Franchise Development and Design for Dairy Queen Canada, delivers the closing address on Tuesday April 5 at 1:00 p.m. Drawing on Dairy Queen's over 70 years of success, McNeil will share her insights on the franchising industry. 

The winner of the industry's highest honour, the CFA Award of Excellence in Franchising, will be announced at an awards presentation dinner on Monday, April 4. The selection process is based on a comprehensive survey of franchisor performance by franchisees across Canada. 31 companies are vying for the award. The competition includes four categories to enable franchise systems to be rated against their peers. The categories are:

  • Traditional Franchises (i.e. bricks and mortar locations) New/Emerging (franchising 3 - 10 years)
  • Traditional Franchises (i.e. bricks and mortar locations) Mature/Established (franchising 11+ years)
  • Non-Traditional (i.e. mobile, home-based, etc.) New/Emerging (franchising 3 - 10 years)
  • Non-Traditional (i.e. mobile, home-based, etc.) Mature/Established (franchising 11+ years)

From amongst the winners in each category, the franchise system with the best overall score is awarded the coveted CFA Award of Excellence in Franchising Grand Prize.

That same evening, the CFA presents the CFA Recognition Awards, which pay tribute to individuals and franchise systems for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the Canadian franchise community and for their extraordinary commitment and contributions to philanthropic endeavours. The awards include:

  • CFA Hall of Fame Award for outstanding performance and leadership by a franchise company over a significant period of time
  • CFA Lifetime Achievement Award for exceptional achievement and contribution to Canadian franchising
  • CFA Corporate Citizenship Award for philanthropic innovation, support and impact to the community
  • Vince Nichols Memorial Award for entrepreneurial spirit and dedication as a volunteer, particularly with CFA
