United Ways, the provincial government and the Savings and Credit Unions of BC are working together to better the lives of young children in British Columbia.

Linda Reid, Minister of State for Early Childhood Development, Michael McKnight, CEO United Way of the Lower Mainland and Kim Andres, Vice-President Credit Union Development, Credit Union Central of BC, will join children and families at the newly opened Early Years Centre in Surrey this morning to officially launch the Success By 6® community building initiative.

One child in four in British Columbia isn't ready to succeed in school by age six, according to the Human Early Learning Partnership, UBC. It is estimated that of the 250,000 children in the province under the age of six, as many as 25 per cent don't have the support they need to be physically, socially and emotionally ready to start school.

Success By 6® now includes 18 initiatives reaching 110 communities across the province. The program builds communities by supporting early childhood development and strengthening services for young children and families. Success By 6® will help to ensure that all children develop the emotional, social, cognitive and physical skills necessary to succeed in school and life.

Funding will strengthen and support family resource programs and continue outreach services to aboriginal, new immigrant and refugee families with young children.

Reid's ministry has already committed $10 million to support the expansion of Success By 6 throughout the province. With the support of 38 independent credit unions, with branches serving approximately 1.3 million members throughout B.C., Success By 6® is launching a province-wide fundraising campaign to build on the provincial funding commitment.
