Sudbury Single Starts Higher in June

GREATER SUDBURY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 9, 2010) - According to preliminary data release today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Sudbury single detached housing starts reached 41 units in June up from 25 units started this month last year.

"For the first six months of 2010, single-family detached starts in Sudbury have more than doubled a weak first six months of 2009" stated Warren Philp, Northern Ontario Market Analyst. Sudbury's total of 139 single-detached starts combined with the stronger-than-average 84 semi, apartment and condominium units brought total starts to 223 units this year, 11 per cent ahead of last year numbers for the same period.

Of the three other major cities in Northeastern Ontario, North Bay had the most residential construction activity in the first half of 2010 with 78 units commencing, including 10 multi-family units. Moreover, single-detached starts in this city are more than triple 2009 levels so far. The two other major cities, Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins, completed the first six months ahead of 2009.
