Sudbury Single Starts Recover in 2010

GREATER SUDBURY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 11, 2011) - Greater Sudbury witnessed a strong rebound in single detached starts in 2010 according to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. There were 369 single-detached starts in 2010 in Greater Sudbury, well ahead of the 224 counted last year. Similarly, total starts were up almost 28 per cent compared to 2009.

"In addition to healthy construction levels for single family homes multiple family starts reached the second highest level since 1994," stated Warren Philp, Northern Ontario Market Analyst with CMHC. "An improving economy, low mortgage rates and a supportive resale market, especially early in the year, paved the way for stronger new residential construction levels in 2010," added Philp.

Elsewhere in Northern Ontario, only Timmins saw fewer single-detached starts numbers this year compared to 2009, although total starts were up in that community. North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie both had good years with North Bay single family homes achieving the second highest single starts total since 1989.
