Sugar Bowl Bakery Debuts New Fully Compostable Packaging for Organic Product Line

Family Bakery's New Compostable Packaging for Its Organic Line Reduces Carbon Footprint by 72 Percent

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Jun 5, 2016) - Sugar Bowl Bakery, one of the largest family and minority owned bakeries operating in the United States, today announces the launch of an innovative compostable packaging for its organic line at the International-Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association show in Houston, TX. The decision to incorporate cutting edge compostable packaging for the organic bakery products is a continuation of the company's strategy to have a positive impact on the environment.

"Sustainability is at the core of our business, and we are committed to making the company more efficient, serving our customers better and making a difference in the environment," said Andrew Ly, CEO of Sugar Bowl Bakery. "Creating compostable packaging has been a goal of ours for quite some time now, and I'm happy to say we have finally made our dreams a reality. We are hopeful that our recent innovations will encourage other brands in the industry to follow suit."

The components of the new organic packaging are sourced locally when possible. For example, the recycled paperboard used for the carton is produced using the waste paper from local retailers within a 150 mile radius of the paperboard plant, which is just 30 miles south of Sugar Bowl Bakery's Hayward, CA plant. Each component of the package has been verified compostable, even the wrapper around the cakes and cookies. The compostable packaging will debut with the bakery's popular Organic Brownie Bites and Organic Madeleines.

"We are proud to be among the first to embrace compostable packaging in our bakery department, and we believe this aligns with an organic consumer's intent to reduce planetary impact with responsibly sourced products," said Pete Thomsen, Directory of Sales at Sugar Bowl Bakery. "Ultimately, this provides our retail partners with a strong statement to stand with us in reducing the carbon footprint in the industry. Many consumers embrace the idea of organic products at this point, so a product that first and foremost great tasting and then in addition reduces the greenhouse gases associated with the packaging by 72 percent is a product I think consumers will be excited to try, to love and tell friends and family about."

Over the past few years, Sugar Bowl Bakery has taken the initiative to become a more environmentally friendly company. In addition to the compostable packaging, Sugar Bowl Bakery installed a solar energy system providing 65 percent of the facility's electricity along with multiple electric vehicle charging stations.
