Suitcase.com Releases 2011 Consumer Luggage Report

Survey Results Reveal That Amid Rising Travel Costs and Stresses, Consumers Turning to Quality Luggage That Is Lightweight, Feature-Rich and Unique in Design

SUDBURY, MA--(Marketwire - April 6, 2011) - Suitcase.com, one of the first websites in the industry to sell luggage, travel bags and briefcases online, has released its 2011 Consumer Luggage Report.

The survey, as a follow up to last year's inaugural report, revealed that increased airline fees, along with tighter security guidelines and regulations, continue to directly impact consumer behavior. Additionally, consumers are placing a greater emphasis on luggage that is lightweight, durable and feature-rich, including new technologies and unique, artistic designs.

The quantifiable data depicts travel habits and primary decision factors when purchasing luggage. Key survey findings are outlined below. Download the full luggage report here.

  • 48% of respondents prefer to pack lighter and use smaller travel bags as a result of the increases in TSA regulations and heightened security.
  • 58% of respondents only purchase luggage made with lightweight materials.
  • When purchasing a new piece of luggage for airline travel, the following factors have the greatest influence: weight (76%), durability (76%), size and dimensions (74%), and features and functionality (73%).

"Customers are taking a lighter approach to luggage this year, from lightweight, expandable options for ease of travel, to fun and trendy designs that make a statement," says John Ebb, Suitcase.com CEO. "Features such as wheels, retractable handles and expandability continue to reign, but improvements in the economy have buyers looking at luggage in a new way, whether for conveniences or style."
