Summer Vacation? More Like OBLI-Cation!

Poll Shows Canadians Spending Precious Time Off Fulfilling Obligations

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 20, 2012) - Legally, Canadians working full-time jobs are entitled to two weeks of vacation per year. Some of the more fortunate among us get more time off, but sadly, many seem to be taking what little vacation time they do have tending to personal obligations.

The latest poll conducted by FlightNetwork.com, one of Canada's top travel sites, delved into the 'Obli-Cation situation' and found some startling statistics:

  • 56% of respondents admitted they have used vacation time on an Obli-Cation once in the past year.

  • Others had even less time to relax: 16% had to travel for Obli-Cations twice, with the same number indicating 'forced travel' three or more times.

  • 12.5% claimed that all of their vacation time is already earmarked for required travel.

Weddings were the most common Obli-Cation, with 41% traveling for nuptials. Funerals were the second most common at 18%, with baby-related events and house-warmings tying for third at 13% each. Assorted religious events and graduations accounted for 8% and 6% of Obli-Cations respectively.

The poll also revealed that not all Obli-Cations are obligatory! Some chose to craftily escape their Obli-Cations: One third called in sick for their mandatory travels, with another 30% using 'too much work' as an excuse to stay-put. Another 19% claimed they couldn't afford the trip, while 17% blamed their absence on children or pets.

FlightNetwork.com does not officially endorse any of these Obli-Cation avoidance techniques.
