Sun Basket Expands Nationally, Delivering Organic, Healthy, Delicious Recipes From Coast to Coast

Sun Basket Closes $11.6 Million Series A Funding to Meet Increased U.S. Demand; Opens New Distribution Centers on Both Coasts

SAN FRANCISCO, CA --(Marketwired - May 19, 2016) - Sun Basket (www.sunbasket.com), the healthy cooking service delivering the best organic, non-GMO ingredients and delicious, easy-to-make recipes weekly to your door, today announced it is now available nationwide. One of only two USDA-certified organic meal delivery kit services and the only service to provide breakfast, Sun Basket reflects the best of Northern California's food culture thanks to a world-class culinary team led by celebrated chef, Justine Kelly. In addition to its 65,000 square-foot facility in San Jose, CA, which services eight Western states, Sun Basket has opened its first East Coast distribution center in New Jersey, which expands the company's reach to 34 U.S. States.

Today, Sun Basket also announced the closing of its Series A round of funding with a total of $11.6 million in capital. The company secured $4.5 million in funding in September 2015, and has since raised an additional $7.1 million from top-tier investors. Led by Paul Allen's Vulcan Capital, PivotNorth, and Robertson Stephens Partners, the round also includes Baseline Ventures, The Tyler Florence Group, Rembrandt Ventures, Correlation Ventures, Relevance Capital, Roth Capital, Filter14, and other high profile venture capital firms and angel investors. The additional capital has assisted in powering the company's national expansion, its ability to open the new East Coast distribution center, and its capacity to make additional key hires.

"We are thrilled Sun Basket is growing quickly, adding over $2M in annual revenue run rate (ARR) per week, retaining customers at a really high rate, and experiencing strong demand from users across the country," said Adam Zbar, CEO and Founder of Sun Basket. "With Sun Basket's bi-coastal distribution centers, we can now meet that demand and deliver fresh, organic, nutritious food to 80-90% of U.S. households."

"Organic, non-GMO food is the fastest growing sector in the $600 billion grocery market, and we see Sun Basket as the category leader in the organic meal kit delivery space," said Steve Hall, Managing Director at Vulcan Capital.

"Sun Basket has clearly differentiated its product offering," added Tim Connors, General Partner at PivotNorth. "With their USDA organic certification, national organic supply chain, and Chef Justine's delicious recipes, we see Sun Basket becoming America's favorite way to cook healthy meals, which is a multi-billion dollar opportunity."

Sun Basket's national expansion is being led by Don Barnett, COO, who is the former co-founder of organicgirl, the second largest provider of retail packaged organic produce in the United States. At Sun Basket, Barnett's team is charged with building the first nationwide direct-to-home delivery platform for organic ingredients & recipes. Having distributed organic food to the nation's largest retailers for over 25 years, Barnett sees Sun Basket's model as highly disruptive since it bypasses grocery stores and brings the best organic ingredients, curated by a chef, directly to your door. The result is fresher, healthier food and more convenience for busy working people.

Barnett is joined at Sun Basket by Executive Chef Justine Kelly, who is a veteran of the Bay Area food scene, having served more than a decade as the head chef at the James Beard Award-winning restaurant, The Slanted Door. Chef Justine has a talent for combining the best seasonal produce with globally inspired flavors to create nourishing meals that are balanced, healthy and delicious. Her recipes, which include options for Gluten-free, Paleo, Vegetarian and Omnivore diets, are for people who want to eat clean and feel great. Each recipe is vetted by an in-house nutritionist for low sodium content, low processed sugars, healthy fats, and nutritionally dense ingredients.

"After gaining 50 pounds and being told by my doctor that my health was seriously at risk, I was able to lose the weight by focusing on cooking and eating healthy, balanced meals," continued Zbar, a serial entrepreneur and Webby-winner. "In Chef Justine, I found a kindred spirit to help me realize my vision of creating an easy way for busy people to make cooking at home delicious and nutritious."

Zbar isn't the only one who has benefited from healthier meals thanks to Chef Justine. In a recent survey of its users, Sun Basket found that a majority of customers report that they are cooking healthier meals and eating more fresh produce, while many report losing weight as well.

Sun Basket has also helped its users save time and hone their kitchen skills. According to the same survey:

  • 87% are spending less time planning meals and shopping for groceries
  • 84% have learned about new ingredients and cooking techniques
  • 78% are more excited to cook at home
  • 62% are learning how to cook with the seasons
