Sun Media Appoints Executive Editor in Chief: Glenn Garnett Leads Editorial Content Renewal

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 12, 2006) - Pierre Francoeur, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sun Media Corp., announced the appointment today of Glenn Garnett to the new position of Executive Editor in Chief for Sun Media's English urban newspapers.

"Mr. Garnett will lead the Sun Media initiative to consolidate our editorial expertise and focus our resources on the creation of new content," said Mr. Francoeur. "This is a new position as we implement an innovative approach to produce improved content for our readers."

In his new role, Mr. Garnett will be responsible for the creation and management of specialized teams of reporters and editors across the country. Sun Media will streamline its content creation process and allocate resources to the coverage of local news as well as a host of new features that will be prepared at various Sun Media newspapers for publication throughout the chain.

"We've enlisted some of our most talented writers to tackle topics for the chain ranging from health to technical innovation, and we're looking forward to building teams to develop reports and series of national interest," Mr. Garnett said.

"Through increased sharing of quality content, we'll be able to dedicate more resources to our local news operations - online, on the air and in print," Mr. Garnett added.

"The moves we will make in the weeks and months to come will be bold and sometimes controversial. But we are confident our readers will appreciate the changes we're making to refresh our product and broaden its appeal."

The improved use of editorial talent is part of a multi-million-dollar Sun Media investment that includes the latest newsroom technologies and improved processes to sustain the success of the newspapers at a time when many dailies are facing challenges in their markets.

Mr. Garnett is a 28-year veteran of the news business. After graduating from Ryerson's journalism program in 1981, he became editor of the Toronto Sun's syndicate department, later becoming managing editor of the company's specialty publishing division, Sun Controlled Ventures, in 1988. In 1993, he was appointed associate business editor of the Toronto Sun. In 1998, Mr. Garnett became corporate liaison of Sun Media Corporation, adding responsibilities as the chain's political editor in 2001.
