Sunbelt Software Joins the Anti-Spyware Coalition

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- February 6, 2007 -- RSA Conference -- Sunbelt Software, a leading provider of Windows security software, today announced its membership in the Anti-Spyware Coalition (ASC). Sunbelt joins an alliance of technology companies and public interest groups whose mission is to create a consensus regarding spyware definitions, along with best practices in software development in the debate surrounding spyware and other potentially unwanted software.

The coalition is coordinated by the Washington, DC-based Center for Democracy & Technology, and consists of technology companies that provide anti-spyware tools, public interest groups, and academic leaders.

"We're thrilled to welcome Sunbelt Software to the Anti-Spyware Coalition," said Ari Schwartz, deputy director of CDT and coordinator of the ASC. "The real strength of this coalition lies in a diverse membership united by a common goal of making the Internet a safer place by educating users and strengthening the tools available to fight spyware. Sunbelt Software has done great work in this space and will be a valuable addition to the ASC."

"When the ASC was founded, we had voiced concerns that joining the organization would create potential conflicts with our own listing criteria and practices. However, we have collaborated with the organization since its inception, sharing information and best practices that fostered a mutual goal -- building a consensus about threat definitions and best practices," said Alex Eckelberry, president of Sunbelt Software. "We have seen that the ASC consistently takes an approach which provides its members the necessary freedoms to protect their customers, while working on industry-standard guidelines for listing criteria and dispute resolution. In the end, we felt it was in the best interest of the industry and our customers to put our support behind the ASC and join this important consortium."
