Suncor Energy CEO Rick George named Distinguished Friend of the Institute

Calgary, Alberta (October 25, 2008) — The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) named Suncor Energy president and CEO Rick George a Distinguished Friend of the Institute during a dinner event held in Edmonton last night.

"We are honoured to add Rick George to NAIT's Wall of Distinguished Friends of the Institute. He is a man of vision, integrity and humility," said Dr. Sam Shaw, NAIT's President and CEO. "Suncor Energy values its people, and partners with NAIT to provide training anytime, anywhere. This award recognizes the company's commitment to NAIT, but it also singles out the man at its helm for his personal support of our Institution."

The Suncor Energy Foundation officially launched NAIT's Building on Demand Campaign in 2005 with a $3 million investment — the largest community investment in Suncor's history at the time — to help address the critical shortage of skilled tradespeople in Alberta through the creation of the NAIT Suncor Energy Centre for Piping Technologies.  George served as honorary chair of the campaign, which wrapped up this spring after raising $80 million — $30 million more than its original goal.

"NAIT plays a crucial role in supporting Canada's economic engine by providing the well-educated, highly trained workforce so critically needed," said George. "Ours is truly a rewarding relationship when you look at what the Institute contributes to industry, to our youth and to all Canadians."

Established in 1985, the Distinguished Friend of the Institute award recognizes individuals or corporations that have advanced the well-being and reputation of NAIT through their activities, achievements and support.
