Suncor Energy Foundation supports Volunteer Calgary leadership development tool

Calgary, Alberta (April 12, 2006) - With the support of the Suncor Energy Foundation, Volunteer Calgary today launched an online program that matches non-profit groups with volunteers wanting to occupy a seat at the board table of one of Calgary's 4,000 non-profit organizations.

The program, BoardMatch Fundamentals Calgary, outlines the roles and responsibilities of board service and allows candidates to apply for board positions posted by non-profit organizations.

"At Suncor, we are committed to volunteerism," said Cathy Glover, manager, Suncor Energy Foundation. "By investing $180,000 over the next three years, we are helping to address Calgary's shortage of volunteer leaders. It truly is a win-win situation for the community and individuals.  We are proud to be a partner in that."

Organizations such as the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Canadian Blood Services and the United Way could not operate without volunteer boards.  Collectively, volunteer boards in Alberta are responsible for $10 billion in annual revenues, and lead over 19,000 organizations that employ 176,000 people.

"Volunteer board members play a critical role in the leadership of non-profit organizations, who are required by law to have volunteers make up their boards.  Thousands of volunteers are required each year to ensure these organizations can continue their important work in our community," says Mario Siciliano, president & CEO of Volunteer Calgary.
