Suncor Energy investment in conservation project helps boost Little Smoky caribou herd

Calgary, Alberta (June 16, 2006) — A pilot project to restore the caribou herd in the west-central Alberta area of Little Smoky saw the recent birth of 10 caribou calves, boosting the numbers of the approximately 80-head herd.

The caribou calf project is lead by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development with the assistance of Suncor Energy and other corporate partners.

The caribou calves and cows currently reside within a fenced area of their wooded range to protect them from predators, the primary cause of caribou mortality. In early summer, the cows and calves will be released into their home range.

"It is gratifying to see the tangible benefits of our investments, especially when it protects a vulnerable animal group like the woodland caribou," says Tracey Wolsey, Suncor's manager, Stakeholder Relations and Aboriginal Affairs. "When we see results like this, it tells us our commitment to sustainable development is on the right track."
