Suncor investigates cause of vapour release at Sarnia refinery

Sarnia, Ontario (August 22, 2006) — Suncor Energy Products Inc. has resumed normal operating conditions at its Sarnia refinery following a brief incident earlier this morning that resulted in parts of the facility being evacuated and eleven contractors receiving first aid treatment.

The incident began at approximately 8:40 a.m. ET in the refinery's sulphur recovery unit when vapour containing hydrogen sulphide was released. Work in the area was halted and all workers were evacuated from the affected area. Two contractors received first aid treatment on site at the refinery. An additional nine workers who were in the vicinity also reported to Suncor's medical centre as a precaution.

"Our first priority is worksite health and safety and that's where the focus has been this morning," said Ian Savill, vice president of Suncor's Sarnia refinery. "With the area now confirmed as safe for operations, we'll begin our initial investigation of the incident."

As part of the response to the incident, Suncor triggered a Code 8 alarm with the Chemical Valley Emergency Coordinating Organization (CVECO). This code is used to report a noticeable disturbance, or a potential problem, which could cause concern or inquiry by parties external to a CVECO member's site.

Approximately 45 minutes after the incident began, the area was confirmed to be safe and the "all clear" was sounded.
