Sundance Film Festival to Feature Canadore College Professor's Contribution

NORTH BAY, ON--(Marketwired - January 15, 2016) - The Grandfather Drum, an animated short film produced in part by Canadore College professor Dave Clement, is one of seven short Canadian films selected for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival lineup later this month.

The Grandfather Drum is an animated story that tells the tale of the world losing its balance in the eyes of the Anishinabek People, which leads one of its elders, Naamowin, to build a healing drum to save his grandson and his people. Based on a true story, the film features dialogue in both English and Anishnabemowin.

"For nearly five years Michelle and our team of skilled northern film professionals have worked hard to bring this powerful story to life," said Clement, a professor in Canadore's Digital Cinematography program. "It's a northern story, an Indigenous story, and I believe this is the first 100 per cent northern Ontario-made film to ever go to Sundance."

Clement was the associate producer, story editor and post-production supervisor for the film which was written and directed by his long-time business partner and Anishinabae filmmaker, Michelle Derosier. Derosier and Clement are partners in the northern Ontario-based production company, Thunderstone Pictures Inc.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to be attending the festival with Michelle and our team," said Clement. "It is incredibly rewarding to think that our film was chosen out of 8,700 short film submissions from around the world. It's sort of like going to the Olympics or something. No matter what happens later this month, this is a huge win, not just for us but for the northern Ontario filmmaking community as a whole."

Thunderstone's project is one of only nine animated films screening at this year's prestigious film festival.

Since the festival was founded by Robert Redford over 30 years ago, the Sundance Film Festival has brought some of the most original stories to the screen. It has introduced global audiences to some of the most groundbreaking films of the past three decades, including Boyhood, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station, Whiplash, Brooklyn, Twenty Feet from Stardom, Life Itself, The Cove, The End of the Tour, Blackfish, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Super Size Me, Dope, Little Miss Sunshine, Reservoir Dogs, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, An Inconvenient Truth, Precious and Napoleon Dynamite.
