Sunnybrook to host forum dedicated to quality and patient safety

Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Health/Medical Editor, Media Editor, News Editor TORONTO, ON, MEDIA ADVISORY--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 11, 2006) - On Tuesday, December 12th Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre will welcome healthcare providers from across the GTA and Southern Ontario to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) annual conference forum. The IHI forum is a two-day event dedicated to sharing best practices related to quality and patient safety in healthcare.

Sunnybrook is a fitting choice as it has dedicated itself to becoming the safest hospital in Canada by making this one of its corporate goals. Also, it is the only Ontario hospital that is able to broadcast the forum to healthcare providers across the country via satellite and make attendance free for healthcare workers, meaning that even more people will be able to participate.

During the lunch period, invited speaker John Lewis will share his story and commitment to developing safer healthcare. John's 11-year-old daughter died as a result of an avoidable medical error. John is an RN and Patient Support Rep for Hamilton Health Sciences, and participated in a Ministry of Health and Long-term Care (MOHLTC) Patient Safety task force. He will speak on how to develop a corporate culture of "no blame", learning and patient safety.

Forum attendees will include staff and senior leadership from Sunnybrook, Local Integrated Health Network Board Members, The Conference Board of Canada, the Canadian Patient Safety Initiative, Safer Health Care Now, Patients for Patient Safety - WHO, Community Care Access Centres and hospitals and healthcare organizations across Ontario. Attendance is free to all healthcare providers in the GTA and southern Ontario, thanks to support from national and local partners. Sponsors include: Medbuy, Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (HIROC), and Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD); and partners such as The Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres (CAPHC), the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) and the Quality Healthcare Network (QHN) have helped to make this event possible.
