Sunshine Village Ski and Snowboard Resort: March was the Biggest Snowfall on Record


BANFF, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 1, 2011) - The month of March brought along record-breaking snowfall to the slopes of Sunshine Village. A total of 215 centimetres fell for the past 31 days – the largest amount of snow to fall in that month since Sunshine started keeping records in 1970.

In fact, the last March that even came close was March 1971, when 173 cm fell.

The La Niña effect has been kind to Sunshine. In seven of the nine La Niña seasons recorded since 1970, Sunshine has enjoyed snowfalls above its annual average, according to Sunshine's own records. This year, it kick-started Mother Nature to deliver an average of 6.9 centimetres a day over the month. The month follows a powerful January, which had the best snowfall in five years, and February, which was tied for the best month since 2002.

"The snow just goes on and on; it's been a fantastic winter for snow," says Doug Firby, associate director of Communications for Sunshine. "With all this accumulation, we are able to have both Delirium Dive and Wild West open, and we've added more features to the Rogers Terrain Park.

"It's just a great time to be out here."

The opening of our world-renowned off-piste terrain Delirium Dive and Wild West has satisfied those looking to up the ante on their skiing and riding by shralping the challenging terrain.

Sunshine's terrain park crew also added features to the Rogers Terrain Park, which is constructed every year from all natural snow.

Spring partying starts on April 30th & May 1st, which the Coors Light Cold Party. On May 7th & 8th, rising country star Adam Gregory takes the stage. Then certified country legend George Canyon follows up, with live shows on May 14th &15th. The incomparable 83rd annual Slush Cup weekend rocks through May 21st, 22nd & 23rd, featuring the reggae-inflected live sounds of New Moon. The 23rd is the big day when thousands gather to watch the brave and hardy attempt to ski across a massive pond of ice water.

Spring passes are still on sale, offering unlimited skiing and riding until May 23rd.
