SuperWalk for Parkinson's Raises Record $2.2 Million

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 15, 2008) - Hope and determination motivated 13,000 SuperWalkers in over 80 communities across Canada to raise a record $2.2 million for Parkinson's research, education and support services, with more money still to come.

The 2008 SuperWalk for Parkinson's success was thanks to the support of over 2,000 volunteers, countless donors and sponsors. Today over 100,000 Canadians with Parkinson's are filled with hope - hope for better treatments, hope for a cure for Parkinson's and hope that the causes will be found for this debilitating disease.

James Smerdon of Vancouver, BC, who was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's disease at age 33, raised over $20,000 for research and awareness, with his team "Show me the Smerdon's."

"I hope that with the funds raised at this year's SuperWalk, science will move at a quicker pace than the disease. We need more funds for research. That's why I participated in SuperWalk," said 34 year old James Smerdon.

"We want to thank all the sponsors, donors, walkers, families and friends who made the 19th annual Superwalk a tremendous success. With their support, we are finding answers to important questions like how do environmental factors affect Parkinson's? Why are people being diagnosed at a younger age? Superwalk helps fund this leading edge research," said Parkinson Society Canada President & CEO Joyce Gordon.

Online donations for SuperWalk will continue to be accepted until September 29th at superwalk.com.

SuperWalk for Parkinson's is the largest fundraising event for Parkinson Society Canada and its regional partners. SuperWalk's coast to coast walk-a-thons are held annually in September to raise money (through individual and corporate sponsorship) to help over 100,000 Canadians and their families living with Parkinson's disease. Canadians are invited to participate in next year's SuperWalk on the weekend of September 12th and 13th.
