Beauce holds a special place in the international cycling series

SAINT-GEORGES, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - June 10, 2015) - Department of Canadian Heritage

The Government of Canada, through Sport Canada's Hosting Program, is providing $50,000 dollars to Cycling Canada for the 30th edition of the Tour de Beauce. This international competition, which is being held from June 10 to 14, 2015, is attracting 135 elite and up-and-coming athletes from 20 countries, including 65 Canadian representatives.

The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism, and Agriculture) and Member of Parliament (Beauce), made this announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), at the launch of the first stage of the Tour de Beauce.

Quick Facts

  • In 2014-15, the Government of Canada, through Sport Canada's Sport Support Program, provided Cycling Canada close to $4.5 million for programs and services that have a direct impact on athletes and their development.
  • In 2015-16, the Government of Canada, through the Athlete Assistance Program, is providing 52 cyclists with direct monthly support to assist with living, training and education expenses and allow them to focus on their training.
  • Our top-level athletes are very important to the Government of Canada, as are the health and lifestyle of Canadians. In its Economic Action Plan 2015, the Government doubled the Children's Fitness Tax Credit to $1,000 to help offset the costs of parents enrolling their children in organized sports.
  • At the same time, starting in 2016-17, it will invest an additional $20 million in the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic athletes to ensure they continue to have what they need to reach the podium today and in the future.
