Athletics Canada receives Government of Canada funding to host the 2014 NACAC U23 Championships in Kamloops


KAMLOOPS, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Aug. 8, 2014) - Department of Canadian Heritage

Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament (Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo), on behalf of the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced $200,000 in funding for Athletics Canada. This funding, provided through Sport Canada's Hosting Program, supports the hosting of the 2014 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Athletics Association U23 Championships.

The eighth edition of the NACAC U23 Championships is being held from August 8 to 10, 2014, in Kamloops, British Columbia.

  • The Government of Canada will provide up to $4,888,500 to Athletics Canada during the 2014-2015 fiscal year through Sport Canada's Sport Support Program.
  • In 2013-2014, close to $1,774,000 was provided through Sport Canada's Athlete Assistance Program to 149 Canadian track and field athletes to assist with living and training expenses.
  • The NACAC U23 Athletics Championships are held every two years and attract track and field athletes from over 30 countries. Athletics Canada has named 38 athletes to the Canadian team. At the 2012 Championships, Canada won 18 medals: 4 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze.
  • Athletics Canada is the national governing body for track and field, cross country, road running and road racing.
