Supporting the 10 km Open Water Marathon Swimming World Cup 2016

Swimming Canada receives Government of Canada funding for international event in Lac-Megantic, Quebec

LAC-MEGANTIC, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Aug. 13, 2016) - Department of Canadian Heritage

Stéphane Lauzon, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, today announced $50,000 in funding for Swimming Canada. He made this announcement on behalf of the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities.

This funding, provided through Sport Canada's Hosting Program, supports the 2016 FINA/HOSA 10 km Marathon Swimming World Cup in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec.

Quick Facts

  • The men's and women's 10 km marathon has been presented since 2007 and is the fourth stage of the Fédération internationale de natation (FINA) 10 km Marathon Swimming World Cup. The race, which lasts about 2 hours, has athletes complete six laps of a 1.67-km course.
  • Swimming Canada serves as the national governing body of competitive swimming. It includes 75,000 members and 400 swim clubs across the country. Canadians are global leaders in high-performance swimming and development for both able-bodied swimmers and swimmers with disabilities.
  • In 2015-16, the Government of Canada, through Sport Canada's Athlete Assistance Program, provided $1,460,768 in direct monthly support to 100 swimming athletes to help them with their living, training and education expenses.
  • In 2016-17, the federal government is providing $6,007,915 through the Sport Support Program to Swimming Canada to help develop the sport across Canada, from the community level all the way to our national team athletes.
