SurfControl Threat Experts Alert Customers to Malicious Email Guised as UK Identity and Passport Information

SCOTTS VALLEY, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 23, 2006 -- SurfControl (LSE: SRF), the global leader in Internet protection, today urges customers to be aware of email claims appearing to be from Derby City Council (UK) that notify residents about the new Identity and Passport Service launched on April 1, 2006. The email directs users to click on links provided for more information but in fact downloads a malicious file that appears to be a document in the name of "IdentityCards_DOC.scr." When the malicious file is run, it downloads further files from a Russian FTP site and opens a backdoor to the compromised machine. It logs all applications which are running and sends details of the compromised machine to a Yahoo! email address.

SurfControl's Threat Analysis and Research department is uniquely positioned to provide protection through its Adaptive Threat Intelligence service that spans the globe. Around-the-clock exchange of information on new threats allows SurfControl's Threat Experts to be at the forefront of Internet protection. SurfControl adds any new signatures to all the three products in the SurfControl Enterprise Protection Suite.
