Surging Rocco Rossi Promises Power to the People

Rossi's Proposals Will Return Power to the Public and Help Them Take Back Their City Hall

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 9, 2010) - Rocco Rossi continued to run a straight-talking, ideas-driven campaign over the past two weeks, announcing a package of policy proposals which will restore accountability and trust to City Hall.

Rossi's surging campaign has seen numerous talented individuals join the campaign over the past two weeks and filling key roles. Remarkably, the campaign's volunteer base has doubled during the same period.

Beginning with a focus on returning power at City Hall to the public, Rossi made a series of policy announcements including:

  • The right to recall. Rocco Rossi will allow voters to recall City politicians in cases where they break the public trust.
  • Term limits. Rocco Rossi will implement term limits for City politicians – two terms for the Mayor and three limits for Councillors – to bring new ideas and new thinking to City Hall.
  • Online and phone voting. Rocco Rossi will increase voter turnout by allowing Torontonians to use secure online and phone voting options.

This week Rossi turned to restoring fiscal accountability at City Hall, criticizing opponent George Smitherman's plan to give career politicians the power to review their own spending.

"Mr. Smitherman's plan is fiscally irresponsible," said Rossi. "We cannot leave the role of budget chief to career politicians like Mr. Smitherman who have already wasted a billion taxpayer dollars"

Rossi offered a real and responsible plan to hold City Hall fiscally accountable which includes:

  • Spending freeze. Rocco Rossi will freeze all discretionary spending for the first year of his term as Mayor to immediately end the waste of taxpayer dollars.
  • Independent audit. Rocco Rossi will order a sweeping, independent, third-party audit of all City finances to find out exactly where every cent of our tax dollars has gone.
  • Reducing Council size. Rocco Rossi will reduce the number of City Councillors from 44 to 22 to improve efficiency and reduce political gridlock at City Hall.
  • Establishing a Board of Control. Rocco Rossi will improve local representation and accountability at City Hall by establishing a Board of Control consisting of four Councillors-At-Large to represent Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, and Toronto.

It is time to break the one-hundred year cycle of electing only career politicians from City Council as Mayor. With a historic opportunity to take back City Hall, Rocco Rossi will continue to run a straight-talking, ideas-driven campaign focused on responsible and sensible policies that will restore accountability at City Hall.
