Sweet International Win for Canadian Company

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 21, 2010) - Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz congratulated Island Abbey Foods Ltd. today on winning the Global SIAL (Salon International de l'Alimentation) d'Or grand prize for the most innovative and successful new-product introduction for their Honibe Honey Drop. The award was announced October 18 in Paris, France, during SIAL, the world's largest international trade show.

"I am pleased to congratulate Island Abbey Foods Ltd. on winning this impressive award," said Minister Ritz. "The ingenuity shown by Island Abbey Foods Ltd. reflects the remarkable Canadian agricultural innovation that our Government is proud to support."

In June, Minister Ritz announced an investment of $473,000 to help Island Abbey Foods Ltd. expand operations and manufacture their fully dehydrated honey-based products. The investment was made through Agri-Opportunities, a program created to support new innovative agri-products, processes or services and help introduce them into the marketplace.

"Island Abbey Foods Ltd. is a 'sweet' example of the entrepreneurial spirit that is alive and well in Prince Edward Island and across Canada," said the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Gail Shea and Member of Parliament for Egmont. "There is a bright future ahead full of new opportunities for Canadian honey producers and processors and our Government will continue to stand behind them as they work to create and market new products to consumers at home and around the world."

The honey drops are the world's first 100 per cent pure dried honey made without any additives or preservatives. The Honibe Honey Drop previously won the Sweet Grocery category and was named Best of Canada for 2010 at SIAL earlier in May. The winners are selected by a jury of international trade journalists. In taking home the international grand prize on October 18th, the honey drops beat out over 250 other products.
