Swinton Advises How to Save Money, as Price of Petrol Hits Record High

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Feb. 27, 2011) - Oil prices have climbed to their highest level in 30 months and pushed the price of petrol up a further 5p per litre, which coinciding with last month's ill timed increase in fuel duty means motorists are struggling to pay for petrol.

An online survey of 1200 customers conducted by Swinton Car Insurance revealed 67% have had to readjust their weekly budgets to factor in the increase and a further 21% have started car share schemes.

As such, Swinton Motor Insurance has some top tips for fuel efficient driving:

1. Ensure your car is well maintained. A poorly tuned engine could be using up to 50 per cent more fuel.

2. Travel at times when queues are shortest. Sitting in congestion uses up more fuel.

3. Eliminate short journeys if practical.

4. Don't carry unnecessary weight.

5. Look at the option of car sharing with friends and family, particularly on the school run.

6. The majority of cars run at their most efficient at 60mph. Every 5mph above that you drive, you will lose six per cent of your fuel economy.

7. Make sure you know where you are going before you set off.

8. Driving smoothly is much more efficient.

9. Consider changing your car to a smaller, greener model.

10. Is it absolutely necessary to take the car? The bus or train is much more efficient and can often be quicker, especially during rush hour traffic.

Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager at Swinton Car Insurance, said: "In these harsh economic times, its important motorists follow tips such as these, as they are a great way to save money. It's also important to search for the best insurance quote that's tailored to your needs, as money can also be saved that way".
