Swinton Commercial Advises Businesses to Prevent 'Slip Ups' During Big Freeze

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Feb. 19, 2012) - Swinton Commercial, one of the UK's leading business insurance brokers, is advising businesses to reduce the risk of slipping by gritting their premises, as temperatures continue to drop.

With the Met Office issuing continuous weather warnings and temperatures expected to plummet to as low as -6.2C, Swinton Commercial is warning businesses to ensure that employees and visitors are safe from the risk of slipping, as icy pavements become hazardous.

Figures show that the number of slip and trip accidents in the UK spike during the winter months, due to darker days, heavy rain, and cold weather spells.

Swinton Commercial is warning business owners to make sure they are taking the correct precautions to reduce the risk of injury, whilst making sure they have the correct insurance cover in the event of a slip-up.

Nadeea Gull, Commercial Team Manager at Swinton Commercial, said: "As a business owner you have a responsibility to make sure you are not putting your employees, customers and visitors at risk of slipping on icy or snow covered surfaces."

Swinton Commercial is advising businesses to reduce the risk of slips and falls by:

  • Planning ahead: purchase supplies of grit, sand or rock salt before bad weather arrives
  • Stock up on the essentials including brooms and shovels
  • Make someone responsible for gritting and snow clearance and monitor their work
  • Keep an eye on the weather, consult websites or listen to local radio stations for "up to the minute" information
  • Act quickly: snow is easier to clear before it becomes compacted. Grit can be spread in the evening reducing the work that might need to be done in the morning before work commences.

Ms Gull added: "slipping due to icy weather conditions is a very real issue and it's important that business owners take all the necessary precautions to protect themselves, their staff and members of the public from risks caused by the cold snap. It's also crucial to make sure you have the right employers' and public liability insurance, to make sure you are covered in the event of an accident."
