Swinton Commercial Offers Wind Warning to High Sided Vehicles

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 18, 2011) - Swinton Commercial is urging van drivers to stay safe on the roads this week, after weather forecasts predict bad storms due to the 'tail end' of hurricane Katia.

High winds are expected to be around 80 mph and the commercial van insurance retailer is warning drivers to prepare for bad weather conditions. High sided fleets on the road are at high risk of accidents that can affect other drivers on the road.

A few minutes of good preparation before a journey and staying alert on the roads can help with preventing unnecessary incidents, so Swinton Commercial is offering the following advice for high sided vehicle drivers:

  • Before starting your journey, check the local weather for wind reports.

  • Remember to check traffic reports. There could be closures on high roads and open bridges that can affect your route.

  • Keep full control of the vehicle by ensuring both hands are on the wheel. Any sudden change in wind direction could result in being blown off course.

  • Reduce speed so you can react effectively to situations on the road, other vehicles can be blown into your path such as cyclists and motorcyclists.

  • Don't get too close to the vehicle in front. Make sure you leave plenty of room so your vision is increased.

  • When driving on open roads and high bridges, proceed with caution, these roads are the most dangerous in strong winds.

  • Be alert about your surroundings. Falling debris such as branches and trees can cause serious damage so proceed through country roads with extra caution.

Phil Moss Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton said, "Those who drive high sided vehicles are most likely to be affected by the strong winds that we've being seeing across the UK. It's essential that you make the correct preparations before a journey by checking the weather and road closures. Be alert whilst on the roads and drive with extra caution to prevent any accidents that could affect van insurance premiums."
