Swinton Commercial Reports Hike in Enquires as Van Businesses Surge for 2011

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 10, 2011) - Van insurance retailer Swinton Commercial has reported an increase in quotes and enquiries from potential new customers in the first week of 2011, as people start the New Year with a resolution to start their van own business this year.

A survey of 1,200 customers of the van insurance retailer has revealed that 32% of people are thinking of opting out of their jobs during 2011 and taking steps to be their own boss, with 19% of those people planning in starting a business that involves van travel or van deliveries.

The commercial van insurance retailer also analysed the most popular professions that require a van, discovering that the most popular option for people who want to launch a new business using a van is floristry, with 12% of people admitting that they would enjoy this career choice as a new profession. 9% plan to set up their own building business, while a further 5% plan to start a new career as a painter and decorator.

15% of those surveyed plan to buy a new, or second hand van, to kick start their new career choice.

Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton Commercial, said: "A new business using a van is a really good idea if you have previous experience of driving one. It's obviously also great to be your own boss! However, we would urge any van drivers looking to buy a new vehicle to consider several things before committing to a purchase. There are several safety and performance checks that should be carried out to check that the bargain really is worth it.

"Failing to perform the correct checks could invalidate your van insurance policy if the problems were found to be pre-existing before you bought the van."

Swinton Commercial has provided the following tips to consumers hoping to purchase new or second hand van:

  • Ensure that the vehicle is suited to the job it is undertaking
  • Check that the van is mechanically sound, including previous MOTs and tyres
  • Consider fuel efficiency if you plan to cover a substantial amount of miles of the course of a year
  • Check the levels of security as it could affect your van insurance premium
  • Check the mileage clock and compare to service history
  • Test the brakes for wear and tear
  • Examine the oil and anti-freeze levels
  • Check that the transition between all gears is smooth
  • Check that all paperwork is in order, paying particular attention to the vehicle identification number
