Swinton Commercial Warns Landlords to Check Policies as Fire Hazards Increase in Cold Weather

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2010) - As the winter approaches, Swinton Commercial is warning landlords to ensure that they have adequate landlord insurance as the cold weather sees an increase in house fires.

House fires are more common in winter months as people use their fires, wood-burning stoves, electrical radiators and other appliances to keep warm. While these are a good option and can reduce utility bills, as gas prices continue to rise, they do pose some risks that are preventable.

Landlords need to double check what exactly is covered on their policy in the event of a house fire. Many landlords opt to just cover their buildings which will usually cover damage to the structure. However, damage to light fittings, carpets and any furniture that the landlord has provided for the tenants will not be covered and a separate landlord contents policy would be required.

Swinton Commercial is also urging landlords to consider liability insurance to protect themselves in case a tenant is injured from defective electrical equipment such as faulty cookers, heating appliances or light fittings.

Chris Pearson, Sales Manager at Swinton Commercial said, "Adequate landlord insurance is a necessity for property owners renting out their building to tenants to protect against damage from fires and to protect themselves from injury to tenants. Owning a rental property can be expensive so landlords should protect their investment by considering purchasing the most comprehensive policies available."
