Swinton Commercial Warns Van Drivers to Check Speed Limits as Figures Reveal GBP 65 Million in Penalty Fines

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - July 11, 2010) - Following recent news that fixed penalty fines from speed cameras raise over £65 million a year in revenue, Swinton Commercial has issued a warning to van drivers to check the speed limits for their vehicles.

The van insurance retailer has issued the warning following revelations of complex regulations when it comes to speed limits for commercial vehicles.

According to the Department for Transport, the speed limits depend on the type of van. A car derived van which is classed as a goods vehicle developed from a passenger vehicle, with a maximum authorised mass of no more than 2,000kg can travel at the same national speed limit as a car: up to 60mph on a single carriageway and up to 70mph on a dual carriageway. Vehicles which are outside of this classification are restricted to speeds of up to 50mph on a single carriageway and up to 60mph on a dual carriageway.

Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton, said: "When it comes to vans, the speed limits become fairly complex depending on the classification of the vehicle.

"If you are unsure as to which category your van falls into we would suggest that you stick to the lower speed limit to avoid a costly fine and penalty points which may increase your van insurance premium."

Despite the confusing regulations and the staggering amount of money collected from penalty fines for speeding, Swinton Commercial has revealed that 77% of its van insurance customers have four or more years no claims, making them some of the safest drivers on the roads.

Phil Moss added: "It's fantastic to see that our customers take road safety so seriously. Speeding is one of the greatest dangers on our roads and we hope that van drivers will continue to adhere to the correct speed limits for the classification of their vehicle."
