Swinton Insurance Offers Motorists Exhaust Theft Warning

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - May 16, 2010) - Swinton, the UK's leading high street car insurance retailer, is warning motorists to be vigilant when leaving their cars in remote car parks following a spate of thefts of car exhaust systems.

Over the past month police in the North West have received a large number of reports from motorists who have returned to their vehicles to find that the exhaust has been sawn off, and there are fears that the trend could spread throughout the rest of the United Kingdom.

Police have attributed the thefts to the rising price of scrap metal, which has increased rapidly over recent years leading to a shift in criminal activity. Vehicle crime is now moving towards exhaust system theft as criminals look to steal the parts to sell.

Swinton is warning motorists to be observant when leaving their cars on car parks, especially in the evening, and urging them to report any suspicious activity to the police.

Steve Chelton, Insurer Development Manager at Swinton said: "We are predicting a hike in these types of thefts in the coming months. The price of scrap metal has risen sharply over the last 10 years and now more and more thieves are stealing car parts to sell for a lucrative profit. Catalytic converters are very valuable and can be sold for a good price in a scrap yard.

"While there is currently no way to stop this type of theft from occurring, we urge all motorists to be vigilant when leaving their vehicles in car parks and to report any unusual behaviour to the police immediately."

Swinton is urging owners of 4x4s to be especially cautious as they have been the main target so far, probably due to the fact that the vehicles are higher off the ground and easier to tamper with.
