Swinton Reminds Motorists About Changes to MOT Test

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 4, 2011) - Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of car insurance online is reminding motorists that changes to MOT testing will be coming into effect in January 2012.

The Department of Transport is adding some new mandatory test items to the annual MOT Test from January 1, to reflect the electronic complexity of modern cars today.

Any cars that are tested and do not meet the requirements of the new changes will have a 'grace' period in which to make those repairs. However, if a motorist fails to make the repairs in the designated period, an MOT certificate will not be issued and the car will be deemed unsafe to drive on the road.

New items will include the testing of the following:

  • Airbags
  • Battery condition
  • Brake fluid warning light
  • Electronic stability control (ESC)
  • High intensity discharge (HID) Lamps
  • Power steering
  • Seat belt pre-tensioners
  • Trailer/caravan electric socket
  • Tyre pressure monitoring systems
  • Visible wiring condition
  • Catalytic converter
  • Electronic parking brake
  • Electronic seat adjustment motor

The new MOT Test will also check headlights on new vehicle models to ensure they are not too bright and likely to dazzle oncoming motorists.

Steve Chelton, Claims Manager at Swinton car insurance said, "The MOT test is vital to make sure cars remain in a safe and roadworthy condition. As cars become more technologically advanced, it is crucial that the MOT test keeps up-to-date with these changes to ensure that all bases are covered where safety is concerned.
