Swinton Sees a Fall in UK Owners Car Maintenance

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - May 17, 2011) - A leading high street retailer is warning motorists about the potential dangers and long term costs that can occur from failing to meet basic car maintenance regulations.

Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of car insurance surveyed 1,200 motorists and found that 23% of motorists wouldn't know if their tyre tread was below regulation depth. The minimum legal requirement is 1.6mm of tread depth across the central width of the tyre, this is also a safety requirement too. Worn down tyres are much more likely to skid so it is crucial that motorists get them changed when necessary.

Surprisingly, only 31% of customers regularly check tyre pressure. Swinton is reminding motorists that if tyres are pumped correctly it will not only extend the life of tyres but it can also save up to 10% on fuel.

The online survey also showed that 27% of customers ignore dashboard signals. These signals are the car's way of showing the driver that there is something wrong and if they are ignored it could result in expensive damage.

Swinton car insurance is also advising motorists to get regular services, after 29% of customers admitted that they only get an MOT because it's compulsory (for cars over three years old). Regular services are crucial to maintain a car at peak efficiency.

Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager at Swinton said: "It is surprising that there are so many motorists that are failing to look after their vehicles. People wouldn't want to get onto an aeroplane that hadn't been thoroughly checked and serviced so it shouldn't be any different for a car that you drive on a daily basis. Looking after your car has so many benefits in terms of safety, fuel efficiency and car value that it is in car owners' best interests to do so."
