Swinton Urges Homeowners to Start Winter Proofing

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Nov. 7, 2011) - With winter setting in Swinton Insurance, the UK's leading home insurance retailer is urging homeowners to start making winter preparations to their home.

Swinton is encouraging homeowners to get ready for the bleak months ahead by conducting a few inexpensive jobs around the home to avoid costly bills and insurance claims when bad weather hits.

Swinton is offering the follow steps to ensure the home is fully winter proofed in time for the cold weather.

-- Clean out gutters and check the roof- leaky roofs or blocked drains may not be covered by buildings insurance and it is essential that homeowners make these checks to avoid expensive repair bills.

-- Check insulation- this is an inexpensive job that costs around £250 to install and can reduce bills. If insulation is already installed check it is at least 27cm thick, if not top it up. This will also reduce energy bills.

-- Get boilers serviced- Contact a registered engineer to give the boiler a full service as damages can be extremely costly. Services for a standard boiler cost around £50-£80. Ask the engineer to check central heating and to install thermostatic radiator valves to allow control over the output of radiators in individual rooms.

-- Using foam insulation strips on windows and draught excluders on doors can help keep the house warm. This can also help avoid damp problems.

-- Insulate pipes- this will help prevent frozen pipes and will avoid damage to the property. Ensure everybody living in the household knows the location of the stop tap in case of emergencies.

-- If leaving the house for a long period, keep the heating on low to maintain the warmth of the property and avoid any freezing pipes.

Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager at Swinton says, "It's essential for homeowners to prepare for the bleak months ahead. Not being prepared can end in expensive unnecessary bills and insurance claims. However, homeowners must remember not all winter damages will be covered by insurance so they should double check their polices and ensure they are adequately covered for all home emergencies."
