Swinton Urges Homeowners to Take Care as Homes Across the Country Are Left Empty

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 12, 2010) - Swinton Insurance is warning homeowners to be extra vigilant throughout September, as millions of homes are left unattended during the day as kids go back to school and parents settle back into work.

In the morning rush getting ready for work and getting little ones ready for school, it is easy to be forgetful about home security, however it is essential homeowners stay vigilant and secure their homes before they leave for work, especially if their homes are due to be empty all day.

Swinton surveyed 1,200 online customers and found that 11% had returned from work to find they hadn't locked their door properly or not set the alarm. Should this happen, a home insurance policy could be deemed invalid in the event of claim.

It also seems that homeowners are not just forgetful in the mornings, as many homeowners are forgetting their renewal dates or choosing not to take out a home insurance policy at all, putting their possessions at risk. Of those surveyed, 16% admit to not being aware of when their home insurance renewal date is.

Steve Chelton, Insurer Development Manager at Swinton, said: "As most of Britain is either in work or at school, from this week homes are left empty and sometimes unprotected. It is crucial homeowners secure their homes against the risks of thieves and also have a correct and accurate home insurance policy."

Swinton home insurance has developed a list of top tips to keep your home secure:

  1. Plan to "burglarize" yourself, get familiar with any weaknesses your house may have.

  2. Lock up your home, even if you go out only for a short time.

  3. Change all the locks when you move into a new house.

  4. Your house should appear occupied at all times.

  5. Don't keep spare keys in the obvious places.

  6. If the entrances to your home are dark, consider installing lighting.

  7. Get a dog; they can be good deterrents to burglars.
