Swinton Urges People to Get Rid of the Snow Build Up

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 3, 2011) - As the snowy weather continues and is set to stay until Christmas and New Year, Swinton Car Insurance is urging motorists to make sure they scrape all excess ice and snow off their cars, to ensure their vehicles remain safe on the roads.

A survey of 1,200 customers online, undertaken by the car insurance retailer, discovered that a worrying 63% of drivers are only scraping the bare minimum of snow off the roads – just enough to make sure they have visibility – and are heading onto the busy roads with snow still heavy on car bonnets, car boots and around wheels. Furthermore, the survey also discovered that 82% of drivers didn't think that they need to remove all snow from their cars in order for safety standards to be maintained.

Swinton has come up with some tips for the safe and effective removal of snow and ice from cars:

• Ensure you remove all the snow and ice from your front and rear windscreen by using an ice scraper, snow brush and de-icer.

• Ensure you remove all the snow that may be lying on your roof as this could restrict your view if it falls onto your windscreen during your journey.

• Ensure snow and ice is removed from your licence plate and front and rear lights so that other road users can see your intentions.

• Never leave your engine running while you are scraping snow and ice off your car. If your car is stolen while the keys are in the ignition your motor insurance may well be invalidated.

Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager at Swinton Car Insurance, "It's absolutely essential that excess snow and is removed from cars before embarking on any journey, especially over the festive season when long journeys are more likely. Removing snow and ice will also reduce the risk of an accident."
