Swinton Urges Van Drivers to Be Wary of the Ice

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 18, 2012) - The number of vehicle breakdowns nearly doubles at this time of the year, with the cold weather affecting road conditions, particularly when snow and ice strikes.

In light of this, Swinton Van, the UK's leading high street retailer of van insurance, is warning van drivers to be wary of the ice this winter as the extreme weather conditions can be treacherous for those driving large vans, heavily loaded with goods.

Swinton Van has some useful tips to help prepare van drivers for hazardous driving during the cold months ahead:

  • Check there is enough antifreeze in your radiator and screenwash - if fluid in a car's radiator freezes, this can cause the engine to crack costing hundreds of pounds to repair, and if screenwash is frozen it could take a while to thaw out before drivers can use screenwash to clear any dirt from a windscreen
  • Fit a set of winter tyres - these tyres are made from materials that can grip roads covered with ice and snow
  • If winter tyres aren't an option - ensure there is at least 3mm of tread on all tyres
  • Avoid driving on country roads - it is less likely that these will have been treated for the icy conditions
  • Keep a fair distance between vehicles in front - in hazardous conditions like ice and snow, stopping distances are increased by as much as ten times
  • Keep gear changing and braking to a minimum and, if you have to, do it gently. If the wheels start to slide or skid, don't slam on the brakes, as it will worsen the situation

Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton, said: "Drivers shouldn't forget that their own negligence can also become a hazard for others, including road users, passengers and pedestrians. Van drivers are particularly at risk in adverse weather conditions as heavily loaded or high sided vehicles can easily skid and be difficult to control, which is why it is so important for van drivers to ensure insurance policies are up to date and correct to avoid any unnecessary payments for vehicle repairs."

Now you can buy insurance online from Swintonvan.co.uk and drive in the cold weather with peace of mind.
