Swinton Warns Homeowners Not to Post Personal Information on Social Network Sites

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - March 29, 2010) - Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of home insurance is urging its customers to be extra careful when posting personal information on social networking sites.

Burglars are increasingly browsing social networking sites like facebook and twitter to see which status updates mention users being away for the day or on holiday.

Some social network users go as far as putting their home address and telephone numbers on the websites.

The Association of British Insurers has also warned of the dangers of posting too much information after they revealed 40 per cent of social networking site users reveal their holiday plans online – while one in three include details of weekend breaks.

Steve Chelton, insurance development manager at Swinton said, "Posting personal details on social networking sites, such as when you are away on holiday, is advertising your home to thieves which can result in burglaries that could otherwise be avoided. To keep content insurance premiums down, social network users need to be extra careful when revealing personal information."
