Swinton Warns Shoppers to Guard Their Gifts This Christmas

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 5, 2010) - With amounts spent on Christmas presents set to remain high this festive season, Swinton, the UK's leading provider of home insurance, is encouraging people to ensure they have sufficient insurance to cover the additional goods in their homes over the festive season - a time when burglars are more likely to be targeting homes.

A survey of 1,200 customers by Swinton, found that 73.3% of people are planning to spend the same amount of cash on presents as they did last year. With the average household spending £512* on gifts, this means that there are likely to be lots more goods stored in homes than usual.

The survey by the home insurance provider also found that 78% of people planned to start their Christmas shopping in the next fortnight, meaning that it is crucial that people ensure their policies cover all home contents ASAP.

Steve Chelton, Insurer Development Manager for Swinton, said: "Not many people are aware that at Christmas their home insurance is increased by at least 10% for up to 30 days either side of Christmas Day. This is to protect all of the additional items that can be in the home at this time of year, such as expensive presents.

"We would urge all homeowners to check that they have adequate home insurance, especially during Christmas. Many thieves prey on homes during the festive season, knowing that they are often stacked with pricey gifts."
