Swinton Warns Van Drivers of Drink Driving Dangers

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 12, 2010) - With the festive season in full swing, Swinton Commercial is issuing a reminder to van drivers about the dangers of drink driving.

The van insurance retailer issued the warning after a survey of 1,200 van drivers showed that 17% of them suspected that they had driven the morning after while over the drink drive limit after a Christmas do, or festive evening drink.

Van drivers spend the most of their time on the road and usually work early in the morning leaving them more susceptible to being caught out the morning after. With this in mind, Swinton Commercial is offering these helpful tips to van drivers to ensure they are fit to drive the morning after:

  • If you know that you may be consuming alcohol then leave your vehicle at home
  • If you are able to designate a driver for the evening who will remain sober and drop everyone home afterwards then do so
  • "Sobering" up with "tricks" like drinking coffee and taking a cold shower do not work so do not rely on these in the morning
  • According to NHS guidelines it takes an hour and a half for a unit of alcohol to leave your system so make sure you wait the appropriate time before getting back behind the wheel.

Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton said, "Drink driving is very dangerous, not only can it cause road fatalities but it also has massive implications, including a possible jail term and hugely expensive future van insurance uk premiums. Van drivers need to ensure they leave enough time from when the last drink is consumed to when they get back behind the wheel to ensure they are not over the drink drive limit."
