Swinton Wary After Streetlights Are to Be Dimmed

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - April 11, 2011) - The Government has revealed their latest efforts to save the country's economy, as Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles unveiled plans to turn off the nation's street lights.

Swinton Home Insurance is treating this latest effort with caution and urging homeowners to remain vigilant in their homes. The words of warning comes on the back of an online survey, where 64% of the 1200 respondents surveyed said they felt less safe on dark streets and 72% thought their homes were at more of a risk in low light.

The scheme is being implemented to save local councils money as their budgets get slashed and with typical sodium street lamps costing £20 - £40 a year to run, it could end up saving some councils over £100,000 a year.

However, as the survey has shown the proposed dimming of street lights is spreading panic amongst homeowners who feel the contents of their homes are being put at risk and they can't afford to make a claim on their contents insurance in these tough economic times.

Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager at Swinton Home Insurance, said: "This proposed change in street lighting could push crime figures up. Any homeowners worried about the changes should make sure they remain vigilant, secure their homes and have adequate home insurance."
