SwRI's Alger to Receive ASME Internal Combustion Engine Award

Recognized for Innovations in Internal Combustion Engine Technologies

SAN ANTONIO, TX--(Marketwired - September 27, 2016) - Dr. Terry Alger, a director in the Office of Automotive Engineering at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), will receive the 2016 Internal Combustion Engine Award given by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

The award, established in 1966, recognizes Alger's "exceptional technical and business leadership that has led to multiple innovations in internal combustion engine technologies and the transition of these innovations to production engines for significant real-world impact on vehicle fuel economy." Alger will receive the award during the Internal Combustion Engine Fall Technical Conference Oct. 9-12, in Greenville, S.C.

"This industry recognition is a tribute to Terry's dedication to improving the efficiency of internal combustion engines," said Daniel Stewart, P.E., vice president of SwRI's Engine, Emissions, and Vehicle Research Division. "Terry has contributed many groundbreaking innovations for spark ignited engines to improve efficiency and meet future emissions standards worldwide."

A Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), Alger is director of SwRI's Spark Ignited Engine Research and Development Department. He is a recognized expert for in-cylinder combustion processes and advanced engine technologies to improve engine efficiency and emissions. He is one of the inventors of SwRI's DCO® (Dual Coil Offset) Ignition system and the D-EGR® (Dedicated Exhaust Gas Recirculation) engine, both winners of R&D 100 Awards. To develop more efficient gasoline engines, Alger researches ignition systems, abnormal combustion in gasoline engines, boosting systems (turbochargers), and fluids for advanced engine concepts.

Alger has received the Brig. Gen. Clifton C. Carter Award for Excellence in Mechanical Engineering; the Daughters of the American Revolution Medal (for academic achievement); a National Science Foundation Fellowship; a National Defense Science and Engineering Fellowship; the SAE Excellence in Oral Presentation Award; the SAE Lloyd L. Withrow Distinguished Speaker Award; the SAE McFarland Award; and the SAE Horning Award.

Since joining SwRI in 2003, Alger has earned 20 patents and authored more than 50 papers on engine efficiency and emissions. He holds doctorate and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Business Administration degree from The University of Texas at San Antonio, and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the U.S. Military Academy.
